Physical World; Science, Design Technology and Physical Geography

Though our themes about the Physical World we develop our areas of primary intent of:

  • Pupils learn as much about the world as possible.

Starting with their meaningful personal experiences - their internal state, their immediate sensory environment, their local environment and then subject matter and stimuli from further afield- we seek to make the relevant National Curriculum subjects relevant to pupils' lives, motivating and thereby deepen learning. Our Physical World themes integrate the National Curriculum subjects of Science, Design & Technology and Physical Geography at a level accessible to our pupils' learning. We also include areas of Cultural Capital that will familiarise our pupils with references in our general culture and social interactions and thereby promote their optimum inclusion in the common cultural discourse in our society.

  • Pupils learn skills to become as effective as possible.

Throughout our themes of Physical World there are opportunities to develop key skills including communication, numeracy and careful observation, questioning, test, classifying and wider cognitive organisation that, as cross curriculuar core skills, will support learning across the curriculum and life chances both in the present and as they grow into adult life.

  • Pupils grow to become confident, caring, considerate citizens.

Our Physical World themes include important issues of social awareness espeically including personal responsibility for our own health and physical wellbeing, caring for others, animals and plants and wider care for our planet.
