Social World; Social Education, Citizenship (Social Aspects), History, Human Geography, Religious Education (Religions), Spanish

Social World includes teaching pupils about the core elements of Social Education, Citizenship, History, Human Geography, Religious Education and Spanish. Often these subjects are addressed separately in learning session and programmes but they are taught together within a term to optimise the links between them on the basis of a key theme that focuses pupils on learning about the people around them and in the wider world. Each year the theme starts with elements closest to pupils' current understanding and experience and works outwards through the subsequent terms towards understanding the wider world. In this way we find that pupils will achieve deeper learning and optmise their genuine progress in understanding. We promote access to Cultural Capital- the things that most people in our communities know and understand- as these can be understood related to the pupil-centred learning journey.

We address our key intent areas of:

  • Pupils learn as much about the world as possible

We look at key areas of our social life and explicitly teach pupils about Family Life, Leisure, Life as a Consumer/shopper and People who help us, in our own lives and the wider world.

  • Pupils learn skills to be as effective in the world as possible

Learning about these areas promotes consideration of important matters at a moral, British Values, and Religious level that develop social and citizenship skills across the curriculum and in wider life both in the present and for future growth towards adulthood.

  • Pupils grow to become confident, caring, considerate citizens

Many of the themes of Social World directly contribute to this prime area of intent, teaching our pupils to optimise their awareness of others in the areas of family, social interactions (leisure), responsibilities as a consumer, worker and to promote peace in their own lives and more widely.

Please find our long term plan attached that shows when we address the important aspect of learning that our pupils can access from the National Curriculum.
